ATCO Frontec, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canadian Utilities Limited, started as a "greenfields" initiative, whose name stands for Frontier Technologies. The Company was incorporated in 1986 to supply electrical services, technical expertise and logistical support in northern Canada, and has become a world-class facilities management and technical services company.

The first contract awarded to ATCO Frontec in January 1988 was to manage, operate and maintain the North American Aerospace Defense Command's (NORAD) North Warning System, which now includes 46 radar sites and five logistical support sites scattered throughout Canada’s far north. Since then, ATCO Frontec has gained experience in the operation and maintenance of assets and facilities as varied as radar sites, deployed military camps, mine sites and civilian and military airports.
