With our partners, Arctic Slope World Services, ATCO Frontec operates and maintains the radar and site communication equipment on the Alaska Radar System (ARS). The ARS is comprised of 18 geographically separated radar stations, of which 15 are staffed and the other three are unattended.
The 15 long-range radars (AN/FPS-117’s) offer three-dimensional coverage while the three short-range radars (AN/FPS-124’s) offer two-dimensional coverage. The short-range radar are designed for unattended operation and ARCTEC utilizes sophisticated remote electronic monitoring and control systems to ensure 24 x 7 operations. These systems control the electronic mission equipment, the prime power sources, fuel systems, security monitoring and various other facility support systems.
The Alaska Radar System has a complex communication system designed to ensure available and secure communications. ARCTEC is responsible for the operation and maintenance of its components which include a ground radar and beacon, tactical ground-air-ground radio, telephone, and land mobile radio.
