Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS)

ARCTEC Services was a joint venture created in 1999 between ATCO Frontec and ASWS to operate and maintain five communications/radar sites of the Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) - a geographically diverse United States Air Force radar protection system. ATCO Frontec completed its commitment to this project on September 30, 2006.

Although services vary by site, they included radar, communications, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), and electronic control systems and overall facilities.

ARCTEC Services provided operation and maintenance of Communications systems and radar equipment at the five sites under contract with the United States Air Force Space Command. Services provided at each location are detailed below:

  • Beale Air Force Base, California and Cape Cod Air Station, Massachusetts - ARCTEC Services operated large power production centres and performed all facility maintenance, HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems
  • Clear Air Station, Alaska - the scope of services at this site was much broader and included operation and maintenance of all base facilities, civil engineering, power, HVAC, water and wastewater systems, structures, grounds, housing, food services, health services, environmental management, vehicles and railroad
  • Thule Air Base, Greenland - service was limited to operation and maintenance of radar and satellite communications
  • RAF Fylingdales, United Kingdom - ARCTEC Services was responsible for the operation and maintenance of only the satellite communications systems with the United States military handling all other operation and maintenance services at that site

At Clear Air Station, AK and Thule Air Base, Greenland, ARCTEC Services also managed and operated the Air Force Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL) facilities-calibrating test measurement and diagnostic equipment used by third parties.
